For more than two decades San Domenico New York has set the standards for contemporary Italian Cuisine, and continues fulfilling high expectations at their new Madison Square Park location, known as SD26 (short for San Domenico, 26th Street). Father and daughter team, Tony and Marisa May, preside over one of the more modern dining rooms in New York City, which is a fun setting for both traditional and innovative cucina italiana.

There’s heavy emphasis on the traditional Italian triad of grains, olives and wines, but SD26 also takes pride in using vegetables and fruits from small-farm producers, meats and fowl from free-range farms and organically preserved boxed, canned and jarred specialty food products. Every dish offered features an ingredient that can be purchased on site. These meals exemplify the wide variety of Italian dishes, whether it be smaller, more nutritionally-based portions, or rich, larger entrees. However, the unifying theme is simplicity, making each ingredient count.

SD26 also takes great care in their wine selection, which includes approximately 750 labels from a variety of Italian vineyards, all displayed in an electronic PDA wine menu.

For lunch, SD26 has specialized its Il Quadrifoglio (the health symbol in Italy); a one course meal that’s nutritionally balanced, studied specifically by a group of Nutritionists at the University of Milano. The menu has been crafted by skilled professionals, and while still flavorful, is balanced in-order to re-energize you for any afternoon work or activity.

With all this careful attention and effort, SD26 still keeps their atmosphere entertaining, and their quality high, making it unique among New York City Italian restaurants.

SD26 is the reincarnation of San Domenico, which presided over Central PArk South for 20 plus years. Tony May and his daughter Marisa have moved downto Madison Square Park. The new space, though windowless, is sleek and modern and fun to be in. The open kitch and salumi station add to the energy. A few complains — first, shame on me — I ordered the salumi sampler for the table and sure enough, we got a plate of mortadella, and no prosciutto until I complained. After that, the food was excellent — panzanella, followed by uovo in raviolo, gnocchi di zuca and chicken livers, superb lamb chops. All well prepared, well served, and delicious. The wine list is electronic, so you browse easily by region and variety. All in all, a top NY Italian, and tough to beat if you have the budget. Bravo.

This is one of NYC’s best Italian restaurants. Chef Fada delivers excellent food and quality on every level, from the in restauratn salumeria, to the pasta, secondi and dolce. The wine list (on an electronic reader) is cool, but I prefer an old fashioned list. As a friend from Puglia put it, “top notch.”
