Each of Italy’s twenty regions have acquired significant autonomy from the central state since 2001. Regional constitutions are in place, allowing each region freedom in selecting a form of government and principles of organization. Citizens of each region elect the President of the Consiglio Regionale (regional council). The President of the Consiglio Regionale heads the Giunta Regionale (regional government), and has power over any other members. The regions are the first level of administrative divisions in Italy.
